Weston Jets 15 Cardiff Merlins 21
Cardiff Merlins defeated Weston Jets by 6 runs on Sunday to effectively end Weston’s season.
The in-form Welshmen fresh from their first ever win last week, made it two wins in a row with a narrow but deserved victory over the Jets at Robson Field.
It was a case of third time lucky for the Merlins. The Jets had previously won both the regular season games against Cardiff but unfortunately slipped up in this crucial post-season game and now find themselves with almost no possibility of advancing to the Single A Championship game.
The game started very evenly matched with both teams unable to dominate the early innings. The Jets committed a couple of early errors but were able to stay in contention, scoring 5 runs in the 4th inning.
Marshall Hanney, pitching another solid game for the Jets then knocked out the next 3 Welsh batters in quick succession but unfortunately, with the game in the balance, Weston’s hitters failed to capitalise, failing to score another run for the next 4 innings.Cardiff took their chance and opened a sizeable lead for the first time in the game.
Like they have done, so many times this season, the Jets showed their fighting spirit and scored an incredible 10 runs in the final innings with 2 men already out. A comeback wasn’t to be this time though, as the Merlins held their nerve to get the final out and win a very close fought entertaining game.
“The team didn’t really do a great deal wrong today”, Jets Chairman Kev Robson said afterwards, “We made a few errors, especially early on, but on the whole our defence was very good. It was probably our hitting, or rather our lack of hitting at a crucial period that proved costly today, but we dug in and fought to the very end again and I’ll definitely take away far more positives than negatives from this game. Chris Taylor was our most valuable player today getting 4 great hits, scoring 3 runs and driving in 3 more”.
The Jets now have a week off before their next game away to the Bristol Buccaneers.
