The Four teams that left the South West Baseball League (SWBL) following it’s decision to affiliate with the British Baseball Federation (BBF), the National Governing Body for Baseball in the UK have launched their own new independent league.
The new Westcountry Baseball League is to launch in 2021 with teams from across Somerset and Devon
The new league committee announced:
“The continued growth of baseball in the South West has been boosted with the launch of the Westcountry Baseball League.
The new, independent league is aiming to open its season in May, COVID-19 restrictions permitting, with the Exeter Spitfires, Newton Brewers, Plymouth Mariners and Yeovil Whirlwinds all announcing they will all be participating.
It is anticipated that further teams will be joining the inaugural season in the very near future.
In a joint statement, the four founding clubs said: “We are delighted to be able to be part of the WBL and to encourage even more men and women to get involved in this sport across the region.
“The South West has seen some of the fastest growth in baseball participation in the UK thanks to the welcoming and competitive environment we have created. We will be proud to see the Westcountry Baseball League continue this tradition through the involvement of both highly experienced clubs, alongside teams and players who are new to the sport.
“The WBL has also registered its interest in signing up to the Baseball Softball UK charter as it looks to be part of a progressive national framework for development, as well as being part of the British Baseball Council.
“After a tremendously difficult year due to a pandemic unprecedented for many generations, we are all looking forward to the safe return of baseball in 2021.”

We wish the new Westcounty Baseball League and all the players and officials from those clubs all our best wishes for future success and hope that we can meet them again on a baseball diamond again very soon”.
